    A workbench is a table used in woodworking, metalworking, and other trades upon which work of a specific nature may take place. The workbench may be any size, but is normally a rectangular shape. They are frequently about 3 or 4 feet high, but many people construct their workbenches to a height that they feel comfortable working on. Woodworking benches are normally made from hardwoods such as poplar or spruce. Metalworking benches are normally made with mild steel sheeting or a plywood body with angle iron attached to the rim. Workbenches often have vices attached to them for wood workers. Woodworking benches also make use of dog holes and bench dogs, which are used in clamping operations or as stops for work to butt up against.
